Before you book
What affects the quotation, which size may suit the job and what details the office needs.
Permits, placement, waste rules, collections and the right skip for the job — clear guidance before anything is booked.
Search by a word such as permit, mattress, collection or driveway.
What affects the quotation, which size may suit the job and what details the office needs.
Driveway access, public-road permits and the space a skip lorry needs to work safely.
What can go in, fill levels, access for collection and how to avoid a wasted journey.
Call the office or use our Request a Quote page. We check the postcode, skip size, waste type, placement and required dates before confirming a price. BLS does not display automatic online prices because the practical details can change the correct option and cost.
No. You can send the job details online, but a member of the BLS team checks them and confirms the quotation, availability and payment arrangements directly. A submitted form is an enquiry, not a confirmed booking.
We arrange common domestic and builders’ skips as well as larger commercial options and roll-on roll-off containers. The right size depends on the material, available space and how much waste you expect. Tell us about the job and we will recommend a sensible option rather than simply guessing.
The agreed hire period is confirmed when the booking is arranged. If you need longer, contact the office before the agreed period ends. Extensions and availability are checked case by case and may involve an additional charge.
A skip placed on a public highway will normally need permission from the relevant council or highway authority. Requirements and lead times vary by area. Tell BLS the exact postcode and intended position before booking so we can confirm the next step. Read the Skip Permit Guide for a clearer explanation.
The lorry needs safe access, room to lower and collect the skip, a suitable surface and clearance from parked vehicles, gates, trees and overhead cables. A tight driveway may look large enough for the skip but still be unsuitable for the vehicle. Send photographs when access is uncertain.
Skips and delivery vehicles are heavy. Boards may help spread contact with some surfaces, but they cannot guarantee against marks or damage. Tell the office about block paving, soft ground, drains, slopes or a newly laid surface before delivery so the risk can be considered.
Not always, provided the position and access are completely clear and the office has accepted the instructions. For awkward sites, locked gates or several possible positions, being present is the safest option. Never rely on an unconfirmed note alone.
Common non-hazardous building and household waste is usually accepted, including timber, metal, rubble, soil, plastics and old fixtures, subject to the agreed waste type. Different material mixes can affect the correct skip and price. Check our What Can Go in a Skip? guide before loading.
Items such as asbestos, gas cylinders, tyres, batteries, fridges, freezers, electrical items, liquids, paint and chemicals must not be added unless BLS has specifically confirmed an appropriate route. Plasterboard may also need to be kept separate. Ask first — quietly hiding restricted waste in a skip creates a bigger and more expensive problem later.
Waste must remain level with the top of the skip and must not project above the sides. An overloaded or unsafe skip may be refused at collection and wasted-journey or reattendance charges can apply. Heavy materials should also be discussed because vehicle weight limits still matter even when the skip is not visibly full.
The recovery rate depends on the waste, supplier and processing facility. BLS works with licensed waste partners and aims to route recyclable material responsibly, but we will not invent a blanket percentage that cannot be guaranteed for every job.
Contact the BLS office with the booking details and collection request. Collection timing depends on route availability and is confirmed separately; do not assume the skip will disappear automatically on a particular day unless that has been agreed.
Keep the route and working area clear of cars, gates, stored materials and low obstructions. The waste must be safe and level. If access has changed since delivery, tell us before the vehicle is sent.
A charge may apply when the vehicle attends but cannot safely complete the job — for example because the skip is overloaded, blocked in, contains prohibited waste, has been moved to an inaccessible position or the site is locked. The cost is confirmed case by case.
No. Moving a loaded or empty skip can create access, safety and surface-damage problems, and the collection vehicle may no longer be able to recover it. Contact BLS before changing anything about its position.
Yes. BLS arranges waste services across the UK through a nationwide supplier network. Availability and exact service options are checked against the job postcode before anything is confirmed.
Yes. BLS can arrange road sweeps, man-with-a-van clearances, fencing, house renovation support and larger commercial waste solutions including RoRos. See Other Services or contact the office with the job details.
Standard skips suit many domestic, trade and building jobs. Roll-on roll-off containers are much larger and are generally used for higher-volume commercial, industrial or major renovation waste. RoRos need considerably more vehicle access and site space.

These guides answer the questions most likely to affect placement, collection or the correct waste route.
Understand when a public-road permit may be needed and what to check before delivery.
Read the permit guide →Check common accepted waste, restricted items and materials that need separate handling.
Check the waste guide →Send the postcode, waste, placement and timing so the office can assess the real job.
Start a quote enquiry →A postcode and skip size alone rarely tell the whole story. Access, placement, waste type, permits and timing can all change what is suitable.
We would rather answer one extra question now than send the wrong service later.
